Tending What God Has Planted

May is the month when everything begins to grow in earnest. The buds that appeared in April start to open. The grass greens. The air warms. The world feels like it’s stretching, reaching, leaning toward what it was created to become.
Parenting has a May season too — a time when the seeds we’ve planted begin to show signs of life. Not fully formed. Not finished. But visible. Hopeful. Growing.
Sometimes it’s a new habit taking root. Sometimes it’s a softened attitude. Sometimes it’s a moment of maturity that catches us off guard. Sometimes it’s simply the reminder that God is working beneath the surface, even when we can’t see the full picture yet.
May invites us to slow down and tend what God is growing — in our children and in ourselves.
The Work of Steady Growth
Scripture reminds us, “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9). Growth rarely happens overnight. It’s slow, steady, and often hidden. But it is happening.
In parenting, that growth shows up in small, sacred ways:
• A child choosing kindness when it would be easier not to
• A calmer response to frustration
• A willingness to try again after a hard day
• A new spark of responsibility or independence
• A moment where you see God shaping their heart
These moments are like tiny green shoots — reminders that the seeds of faith, patience, and love you’ve planted are beginning to rise.
When Growth Requires Patience
Of course, May isn’t all sunshine and blossoms. It’s weeds. It’s sudden storms. It’s pollen everywhere. Growth requires tending — pulling what doesn’t belong, watering what does, and trusting God with the parts we can’t control.
Parenting mirrors that rhythm.
Some days feel like progress. Some days feel like setbacks. Some days feel like you’re doing everything right. Some days feel like you’re starting from scratch.
But God is faithful in every season. He doesn’t ask us to produce the harvest — only to tend the soil with love, consistency, and grace.
Parenting With a May Heart
A May heart is one that commits to the slow work of nurturing. It’s steady. Hopeful. Patient. Willing to show up again and again, even when the results aren’t immediate.
We parent with a May heart when we:
• Choose consistency over perfection
• Water our children’s hearts with encouragement
• Pull the weeds of impatience, comparison, or frustration
• Celebrate small steps instead of waiting for big ones
• Trust God with the growth we cannot force
A May heart remembers that God is the Master Gardener. He knows what each child needs. He knows the pace of their growth. He knows how to bring beauty from the soil of everyday life.
Inviting God Into the Growing Season
This month, invite God into the places where growth feels slow or uncertain. Ask Him to strengthen your patience, soften your reactions, and help you see the small signs of progress He’s already cultivating.
Pray over your children — their hearts, their friendships, their choices, their futures. Pray over your own heart too, because parenting is as much about God shaping us as it is about Him shaping them.
May is a month of tending, trusting, and watching God bring life from the seeds we’ve sown.
A Prayer for May
“Lord, thank You for the gift of growth — even the slow, unseen kind. Help me tend my children’s hearts with patience and grace. Give me eyes to see the small steps forward and faith to trust You with the rest. Grow in us what reflects Your love, Your truth, and Your light. Amen.”
