Growing in the Middle of the Mess

February has a way of humbling us. The excitement of January settles, the routines we hoped would magically stick begin to wobble, and real life — the messy, noisy, beautifully ordinary life — takes center stage again. For many parents, this is the month when the goals we set feel harder to maintain and the pressure to “do it all right” starts whispering again.
But February offers us a different invitation: not to start over, but to keep going. To stay faithful in the small things. To trust that God is working even when we can’t see the fruit yet.
Faithfulness in the In-Between
Scripture reminds us that spiritual growth rarely happens in dramatic leaps. More often, it unfolds quietly, slowly, almost imperceptibly. Paul writes, “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9).
February is the “do not give up” month.
It’s the month of:
Half-finished chore charts
Forgotten memory verses
Sibling arguments that feel like déjà vu
Rushed dinners and late bedtimes
Good intentions that didn’t quite make it into habits
And yet — God is present in all of it. He is shaping us and our children not through perfection, but through perseverance. Through the steady, faithful showing up of parents who love Him and love their kids.
When Small Seeds Start to Sprout
Last month, we talked about planting small seeds: a weekly Scripture, a nightly blessing, a Sabbath moment, a simple act of kindness. February is when those seeds begin to take root, even if we don’t see much happening on the surface.
Maybe your child repeats a verse you didn’t think they were listening to. Maybe they ask to pray at dinner. Maybe they show kindness without prompting. Maybe they notice God in a moment you overlooked.
These tiny sprouts are reminders that God is at work — not because we parent perfectly, but because He is faithful.
Loving Our Children Like Christ Loves Us
February is often called the “month of love,” but biblical love looks different from the candy-heart version. It’s patient. It’s kind. It’s steady. It’s sacrificial. It’s the kind of love that keeps showing up even when the laundry is overflowing and the to-do list is long.
